En el film Richard Pryor es Wally Karue, un ciego que está buscando trabajo desesperadamente. Gene Wilder, por su parte, caracteriza a Dave Lyons, un sordo que tiene una tienda. El encuentro de ambos personajes se producirá en la tienda de Lyons, donde éste terminará contratando a Karue.
